Product focus How Mooncard’s card authorisation models give you flexibility and control in just a few clicks.
With over 6000 companies using Mooncard, we know that every business has a different spend policy adapted to their specific needs. And even within a company, the purchase needs of each department or role can vary.
Finance departments and managers can choose from over 60 card control and authorisation options to apply to our configurable cards, and adjust them in real time.
Lots of choice and flexibility... but does this mean setting up cards is a time-consuming process? No!
Thanks to card ‘models’ you can create authorisation templates for the most frequent spend profiles your business needs. When applying control settings to a new card, or changing existing ones, models mean you can apply a pre-saved combination of authorisations in one go. No need to double check the spend and expense policy, no need to apply the settings individually - less time, more control.
We asked our team of expert account managers for three examples of models that they recommend to our clients during the onboarding process. Models are a great base, and can always be personalised for individual users afterwards.
1. Office managers, purchasing cards
‘Who had the card last? I need to renew our Figma subscription’
‘We’ve run out of milk, who’s got the card so I can run to the shop?’
‘I’m at the trade fair but the flyers haven’t arrived, I need to get them printed a.s.a.p.!’
Many office managers or teams will have a card for purchases related to day-to-day office life, online subscriptions, and ad-hoc needs. Sometimes referred to as a purchasing or procurement card, P-card, or simply ‘the card’.
The often ad-hoc or unexpected nature of this type of spend means authorising all days of the week and times of day is recommended. Particularly useful for automatic online subscriptions may fall on a weekend, as well. However, because the individual purchases are unlikely to be high-cost items, a lower spend limit can be used.

The consultant model is also useful starting point for audit firms, lawyers, and any company where the main service they provide to their clients is the expertise of their people. The core principle for this model is maximum travel flexibility and the category selection focuses on costs which are billable expenses such as hotels, public transport, and parking.

3. Interns
Equipping every member of the team with a payment method can be a way of demonstrating value and responsibility, including interns! And not just for the coffee run like in the films. Depending on the industry, the intern model could simply be the same authorisations as their manager but with a lower spend limit. In this example, the model starts with a small selection of authorised categories limited to office days, that can
